Underfloor Heating Installation

Luxurious Underfloor Heating Installation

Underfloor heating (UFH) provides an elegant, efficient heating solution that's increasingly popular in modern homes. At MG Heating Engineers Ltd, we design and install underfloor heating systems across Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, and Peterborough, transforming the comfort and efficiency of your home. With over 16 years of heating experience, we deliver professional UFH installations for new builds, extensions, renovations, and retrofit applications.

Benefits of Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating offers numerous advantages over traditional radiator systems, making it an attractive option for many properties. The even heat distribution eliminates cold spots and provides consistent warmth across the entire floor surface, rising naturally to heat the whole room effectively.

UFH is energy-efficient, operating at lower temperatures than radiators (typically 35-50°C compared to 60-75°C for radiators) whilst delivering the same comfort levels. This efficiency reduces energy consumption and running costs, particularly when combined with modern condensing boilers or heat pumps.

The comfort underfoot is unmatched – warm floors feel luxurious, particularly in bathrooms, kitchens, and living areas where you might walk barefoot. You'll also enjoy more usable wall space without radiators, giving you greater freedom in furniture placement and room design, and the silent operation creates a more peaceful environment compared to radiators that can tick, gurgle, or bang.

Underfloor heating is ideal for allergy sufferers as it doesn't circulate dust and air particles like radiator convection currents, and it works beautifully with all floor finishes including tile, stone, wood, laminate, and carpet (with suitable underlay).

Wet Underfloor Heating Installation

Our wet UFH installation service covers everything from initial design through to commissioning. We calculate heat requirements for each room or zone, design the pipe layout for optimal coverage and efficiency, specify the manifold, controls, and system components, and integrate the system with your boiler or heat pump.

The physical installation involves preparing the floor with insulation boards to direct heat upwards rather than downwards into the subfloor, laying UFH pipes in the specified pattern (typically 150-200mm spacing), connecting pipes to the manifold and controls, and pressure testing the entire system before screeding.

Once screeding is complete and cured, we connect the system to your heat source, commission the system with thorough testing and balancing, and install floor thermostats and controls. We then provide operating instructions and handover documentation.

Wet UFH works particularly well with tile or stone floors that conduct heat effectively, though it's also suitable for engineered wood, laminate, and suitable carpet with appropriate underlay.

Underfloor Heating in New Builds and Extensions

UFH is increasingly specified in new builds and extensions where it can be designed in from the start. This allows optimal integration with floor construction, proper insulation for maximum efficiency, and coordination with other trades for seamless installation.

For new builds and extensions, we work alongside architects, builders, and other contractors to ensure your UFH system is properly planned and installed. We advise on floor construction, insulation requirements, and control strategies during the design phase, then handle the complete installation at the appropriate stage of the build.

Retrofitting Underfloor Heating

Whilst UFH is easier to install in new builds, it's often possible to retrofit systems into existing properties. We assess your existing floor construction and height constraints and minimise disruption during installation.

Retrofit scenarios where UFH works particularly well include bathroom renovations where you're already replacing the floor, kitchen refurbishments during major remodelling, conservatory heating upgrades, and ground floor renovations where you can access the subfloor.

Zoning and Controls

One of UFH's advantages is the ability to create multiple heating zones with independent control. We design zoning strategies based on your usage patterns and preferences, allowing you to heat different areas to different temperatures and at different times.

Modern UFH controls include programmable thermostats for scheduled heating, smart thermostats for app-based control and automation, individual room thermostats for precise comfort, and manifold controls that manage flow to each zone. This flexibility maximizes both comfort and efficiency, heating only the areas you're using when you need them.

Underfloor Heating Running Costs

UFH running costs depend on several factors including property insulation, floor covering, usage patterns, and energy tariffs. Generally, wet UFH systems have lower running costs than radiators due to lower operating temperatures, particularly effective with condensing boilers or heat pumps.

Proper insulation below the UFH system is crucial for efficiency – without it, you'll waste energy heating the subfloor rather than your room. We ensure all installations include appropriate insulation to maximise efficiency.
